Signs You May Need a Professional Bit or Bridle Fitting

Sometimes the tack we use can cause discomfort without us realizing it. If your horse is showing any of the following signs, it may be time to book a professional bit or bridle fitting:

  • Resistance during transitions or difficulty bending

  • Rubbing, sores, or hair loss around the face, poll, or corners of the mouth

  • Unexplained behavioral changes or performance issues

  • Fussiness when bridling or avoiding the bit entirely

  • Bit pulled to one side or sitting unevenly in the mouth

  • Head tossing or shaking during work

  • Reluctance to accept the contact or inconsistent connection

  • Opening the mouth, crossing the jaw, or excessive chewing on the bit

  • Tilting the head or evading the bit sideways

  • Tension through the neck or poll

What to Expect from a Bit and Bridle Fitting

Once you've booked your bit and bridle fitting, I’ll be in touch to discuss your horse’s history, any behavioural concerns, and any specific issues you’re experiencing with your current bit or bridle. This helps me understand your goals and tailor the session to your horse’s individual needs.

I will then travel to your yard for a full, in-person consultation. The session includes a comprehensive assessment of your horse’s head and mouth conformation, as well as an evaluation of your current bit and bridle setup. We’ll also carry out a ridden assessment to observe how your horse goes under saddle.

You’ll have the opportunity to try a range of carefully selected bits to see which one offers the best comfort and communication for both you and your horse. At the end of the session, you'll have the option to purchase any recommended bit, but there is absolutely no pressure to buy.

Double Bridle Bits

I also offer professional double bridle fitting, using either your own bridle or one of my carefully selected demo bridles. During the ridden assessment, if your horse is new to the double bridle, we will introduce the bits gradually to ensure a smooth and positive experience. My goal is to help your horse build confidence while finding the most suitable and comfortable setup.

If your horse is already accustomed to working in a double bridle, we can refine the existing setup to improve balance, comfort, and communication. Whether you’re preparing for competition or simply looking to optimise your horse’s way of going, a tailored double bridle fitting can make a significant difference..
